Unceded = 375+

Christina Marie Phelps, Unceded = 375+, collaged Montreal maps with black pastel and acrylic paint/aerosol on wood, 2016-2017.

This collage reflects the land on which Montreal was colonized. The use of a torn up and deconstructed map of the city, references the destructive nature of colonization on both Indigenous peoples and their land. The white “wash” over top of the collage blurs sections of the map to depict whitewashing by European settlers and allude to fading memories. The aerosol element is an expression of resistance that calls into question the very nature of Montreal’s 375th anniversary.
